“I’m going to hate ALL of your cannonballs.”

This summer I had the absolute pleasure of spending time at camp (cottage for you non-Northern Ontario folks) with my bro, sister-in-law and their babes. Declan is 6 and is an avid cannonballer. He makes such a great splash with his tiny body. He even invented a new jump called “Star Buddy” where he crosses his legs just before splashing in.

We are so lucky to have our lake. The dock is weathered and needs some loving but is still the best place to dive in among the minnows and spend time with the cousins.

One morning, on our way to the dock, there was a bit of confusion as to who was wearing which lifejacket between Declan and his sister, Melia (almost 6.) They have Paw Patrol and Lightning McQueen lifejackets. For days, Melia had been wearing the Paw Patrol because Declan prefers the Lightning McQueen. Anyway, this particular morning Melia chose the Lightning McQueen one which caused a few feelings for Declan. He was disappointed in having to wear the Paw Patrol one and as he was getting buckled in looked at Melia and said, “I’m going to hate ALL of your cannonballs.”

I thought it was funny that he was pre-hating the cannonballs from his sister. Joke was on him because she chose not to cannonball.

But isn’t that what we do sometimes? We decide something before even having had a chance to give it a try. Turns out the Lightning McQueen lifejacket did what it was designed to do. And within a few moments it was forgotten that the Paw Patrol was even on him as he spent the rest of the swim enjoying his jumps and spending time with the cousins on the dock. He’s such a great little swimmer and I love seeing his cute face bob up from the water after a jump from the high dive platform.

So, keep on swimming, Cousins. Even if it is in your not so favourite lifejacket.
