Dear Soul,

I had the pleasure of being a part of a retreat for front line workers recently. I was able to share a slow restorative yoga practice with the participants. We were outside at a retreat centre, on a farm, that I am fortunate enough to be a part of from time to time.

It was a cloudy morning with a chilly air. The yogis were bundled in their blankets, cozy clothes, and socks. We were settled outside on a beautiful deck with the river as a backdrop. The wind was blowing, and the sky blanketed with clouds made it seems even more cozy.

As we nestled in, the barn kitties joined us and shared their warmth and cuddly energy by visiting each of the participants.

We moved through the long holds while flopped on pillows. I shared a question that was given to me in a workshop once and I have carried this question with me ever since.

Are you ready?

Dear Soul, What do you actually want?

Consider that…

Often, we are in our heads thinking about what we want or need… or in our heart – our feelings. But, have you ever stopped to consider what your soul wants?

I remember when I first answered this question, I thought I would reply with something about financial freedom, to be more fit, to put my needs more in the forefront of my life, to swim more… but when I started writing without thinking my answer was simple.

Peace of mind.

It is possible that my other list would move me towards peace of mind… but some of those things were brain lists or what I thought I should want… but my soul really just wants peace of mind.

So, Soul, how are we going to achieve it? I’ve started by repeating this phrase in my mind – Peace of mind. Thankfully I can adapt to what that means from day to day. Some days it means slowing down, other days it means speeding up. Some days it is powering through work and other days it means walking in my yard.

Back to this cozy scene on the deck. We finished up the session as the sun cleared through the clouds bringing warmth and hope.

I invite you to take a moment and write out “Dear Soul, What do you really want?” Be open to the answer that comes – you might surprise yourself, like I did, with what Soul actually wants.

xo
